As the State waited to hear who would govern South Australia for the next four years, over 330 guests gathered at the Adelaide Convention Centre on 21 March 2014 to hear reflections, outlooks and updates from the deputy chief executive of the Resources and Energy group within DMITRE. Dr Paul Heithersay focused on how the State’s resources industry is shaping up for 2014, outlining three areas of world class opportunities; a growing Mining, Equipment, Technology & Services (METS) sector; and a trusted regulator and bi-partisan government as positives for the State.
Guests heard that opportunities for the State lie within copper, gold and uranium in the Gawler Craton; the huge potential for unconventional gas in the Cooper Basin; and offshore oil & gas, particularly in the Great Australian Bight. Dr Heithersay also announced a series of preliminary recommendations on improving PACE, including improving access to land; reviewing non-performance on exploration licences; a one year pilot drilling program in the Gawler Craton; and increased transparency of collaborative drilling program and finance.
